When a house cat is missing, you may be tempted to just wait it out. After all, a missing house cat is somewhere inside (usually). But there is a possibility, however small, that your missing house cat could be injured and needs help fast. Put any worries you have to rest by finding that missing cat in your house.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call out your cat’s name. Be loud, but maintain a cheerful voice. An angry voice may keep your missing house cat hiding out longer. In addition to your cat’s name, use a phrase your missing house cat is familiar with, such as ‘here, kitty’.

  2. Step 2

Shake a bag of dry cat food. Sometimes a missing house cat will come running at the sound of dry cat food. If your cat eats wet cat food, open up a can. The smell of the wet cat food, or even just the sound of the can opening, may be the key to finding your missing house cat.

  3. Step 3

If your house cat is still missing, search each room in your house. Search every nook and cranny, even if it seems like an unlikely place to find a cat in your house. If possible, close the door behind you after you search a room so that your missing house cat doesn’t hide in that room after you’ve searched it.

  4. Step 4

If a thorough search of the house doesn’t find your missing cat, ask someone else in the house to do a second sweep. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes is needed to find a missing house cat.

  5. Step 5

If a search inside the house fails, it’s time to look outside for your missing house cat. Sometimes a house cat will sneak out, like when a door has been opened (even if just for a second to get the mail) or when someone has unwittingly left open a window. See the Resources area for information on how to find a missing outdoor cat.

on 10/29/2008 Great one! I don't know how many times I've been in a panic because one of our cats is missing. One time they actually crawled through a hole under the tub when we were remodeling and got into the garage and outside. They are so quick! *****

on 10/28/2008 Great advice! We had a cat missing for 3 days once, finally found her in a drawer. She had crawled in there for a cat nap the the drawer got closed on her, unknowingly. CHECK EVERYWHERE!
