Being in a long-distance relationship is never easy, but there are ways to get through it! Here are some tips that can help.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lots of love
  • A heap of understanding
  • Hope for the future
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have something to look forward to! Even if the long-distance aspect of the relationship is indefinite, make sure you have a visit planned, even if it is months away. Having something to look forward to makes the hard times so much easier.

  2. Step 2

Communicate! It's so easy to feel alone and forgotten when you can't see the person you love. Make sure that you talk regularly (you can get cheap phone cards online to keep the prices down), and express your feelings for each other. Also let each other know when it's getting hard for you -- just knowing that you're not alone and that the other person misses you too can make it feel better.

  3. Step 3

Perhaps most importantly, keep your word! If you promise to call the other person at a specific time, unless there's an emergency, do it. Long-distance relationships are one of the fastest roads to insecurity. If you promise to call your sweetie, then don't do it, it can feel like you're not taking the relationship seriously, and being able to trust each other is what will get you through.

  4. Step 4

That applies to seeing each other, too! When you make plans for a visit, make sure you follow through. If you don't, it can feel like there will never be an end to the distance, which makes it a lot easier to give up.

  5. Step 5

Every now and then, come up with a little surprise for your sweetie to let them know you're thinking of them. Send a sweet snail-mail card, or leave a message on their work phone number late at night so they'll get it the next morning. Any little thing you can do to make them realize you're thinking of them will help the relationship work.
