Prevent Injury from Dog Attacks

Dogs are considered to be man's best friend. However, it is estimated 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs each year. Around 26 of these attacks are fatal. Here's some tips that will help you protect yourself from an aggressive animal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your Wits
  • Dog Repellent
  1. Step 1

    Stay Calm:

If a dog comes after you, do not run. Dogs have a hunting instinct and can chase and knock you down.

  2. Step 2

    Do not approach strange dogs:

Dogs are extremely territorial and may act aggressively toward you if you get too close.

  3. Step 3

Place an object between you and the dog:

If walking or jogging, get a garbage can or behind a parked car and control the space between you and the dog. If this is not an option, curl up into a ball on the ground and cover your vital organs to prevent serious injuries. If riding a bicycle, dismount the bicycle and place it between you and the dog.

  4. Step 4

Give the dog something to chew on besides your arm:

If you have a stick, book bag, purse, umbrella, or something else you can spare, let them chew on that instead.

  5. Step 5

Pepper spray is a good deterrent to dogs because it inflames the nostrils and eyes. An Electronic repellent is also useful. Electronic repellents use a high pitched ultrasonic sound that is audible by dogs and not humans. This usually deters their attack.
