Why is it that some women have such a hard time getting pregnant and some get pregnant just thinking about... well you get the idea. Well if you're having trouble in the fertility department, you are not alone, and there is help out there. Read on.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First be aware of your situation. Most doctors agree that some fertility issue exists only after a couple has been trying to conceive for a year. This may seem like a long time once you have decided that you want a baby but considering that you are only fertile for a couple days during a month, it's reasonable.

  2. Step 2

There are very natural ways to increase your fertility. First, if you or your partner smoke understand that men who stop spoking have increased their sperm count by up to 800%. Plus it's good practice for your baby! Reduce stress (easier said than done) and eat a diet high in antioxidant's. If you are overweight, it can effect fertility so try to safely lose a few pounds, but remember your body needs nourishment so no crash diets! Ladies, start taking a multi vitamin with folic acid, and men should take a supplement of zinc and folic acid. This simple step can increase sperm count up to 74% Understand your cycle. There are simple tools that you can find online that will assist you in finding out what your most fertile days are depending on factors such as the length between your periods. To further assist you, ovulation predictors can be purchased at any drug store.

  3. Step 3

Talk with your doctor about having your progesterone levels checked. The jury is still out on this but some research is suggesting that low levels of progesterone (a female hormone) can result in infertility or early miscarriage, sometimes occurring before a women even knows that she is pregnant. This test can be done with blood work at a specific time of the month but the more accurate way is to be checked by a cervical biopsy procedure.

  4. Step 4

Ask your doctor for a referral to a fertility specialist if you have tried to conceive for over a year. A fertility doctor will do some various testing on both you and your partner to decide which treatment is best. Try to be patient. This will seem like it is taking forever, and may include a lot of lifestyle changes but remember your goal!

  5. Step 5

It's not often talked about but infertility can cause extreme feelings of stress, depression, and even resentment. It can make you feel very alone, especially if you don't know anyone who has had a problem. It's something that you may not want to tell people about (and it's really none of their business) but I have found that people can be very bold about asking you when you are going to have a baby. For them it's exciting... for you it's heartbreaking. Finding someone to talk to who has been in this situation will really help. There are support groups on line, babycenter has a chat room, or ask your fertility specialist if they hold any group support meetings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speak open and honestly with your doctor. Your doctor should take your concerns seriously. If they don't it's time to find a new one!
  • Don't be afraid to get a second opinion. Doctors opinions and ideas can vary.

on 8/21/2009 Good advice. But I always thought getting pregnant was a no brainer. Two people sleep together and nine months later the Stork drops the baby off at the front door. LOL.
