Things You'll Need:
- Digital Camera
- Subject to Photograph
-
Step 1
Alrighty. So the first step to taking the perfect shot is obviously to get a subject which you would like to take the photograph of.
Once you choose who you will be photographing, choose where you will be photographing. When choosing the location keep in mind that lighting is VERY important. It has to be a well lit area in order to get the most crisp image.
Also, a note on lighting. The best close up shots are taken with the lighting source coming in from the side of the photo. For example, go outside around dinner time when the sun is setting and have your subject turn so that the sun is hitting the right side of their face. Or you can have the same effect inside using a lamp, but it is a little bit more difficult. -
Step 2
Ok. Now that we've decided what and where we will be taking the photo there are a few settings to check on your camera.
The first setting is called "Macro". It is located in different spots on every camera. I have a Sony Cybershot and I can change the Macro settings just by pushing the up arrow, but you might have to look in your manual to see where this is on yours. You want to turn the Macro ON. This is important because Macro allows you to have one object up in front be very clear with the other things behind it be more blurry. It will create a much more professional look on the photo.
Also, turn the flash off. The flash is good for taking pictures of things, but is a big nono when actually taking photographs. -
Step 3
Ok. Now I think it's time to start taking the pictures.
Once your subject is ready and in place, get close to them. Don't stay further away and use the zoom because the photo will be half the quality. If you are taking the photo of a child then get on your knee so you are right at their eye level.
One great idea to keep in mind is that not the whole face needs to be in the picture. Don't be afraid to cut their face off on the sides a little bit. And being off center is usually a very positive element to a photo. Just keep that in mind. -
Step 4
Now that you've taken the photos your done! Unless of course you want to use photoshop to strengthen the photo even more, but that's a topic for a different article.
If you are interested in using photoshop then please check out my continued photoshop How-To for some easy steps that will increase the strength of the image.
Hope you can get some great shots!
