If you burn wood to heat your home this will tell you how much wood it takes to make a cord of wood and the equivalent between using wood and using heating oil.

Things You'll Need:

  • Your mind
  • A printer
  • If no printer, Paper and a pencil -or- ink pen
  1. Step 1

    If you're buying your wood to burn -or- cutting your own firewood,this will tell you how much wood to cut in comparison to how many gallons of heating oil it will equal out to be.

  2. Step 2

    A cord of firewood is 4 feet wide by 4 feet high by 8 feet long. A cord of firewood should have from 77 to 96 cubic feet of actual wood. The bigger the unsplit logs, the larger the gaps. Which makes fewer cubic feet of wood in a cord.

  3. Step 3

    A cord of wood provides the heat equivalent of burning 200 to 250 gallons of heating oil, depending on what type of wood you are using. The best type of wood to use is: Elm,Hickory,Oak,White hickory,Butternut,Beech,Birch.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're buying a cord of firewood this will help you tell if you have got your monies worth and you haven't got cheated.
  • If you're cutting your own cord of firewood, be very careful while using your chainsaw.
  • Never go out to the woods cutting wood by yourself. If you were to get cut -or- have a tree fall on you -or- kick back and hit you. Always take someone with you.
