As a corporate recruiter, I am constantly amazed by how many problems people create when they apply online for a job. Some easy tips will help make sure you get the best read possible. Remember, there are people behind all that technology. Be nice to them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • well written resume
  • functional computer
  • Internet access
  • ability to follow directions
  1. Step 1

Your resume is a sales document, not a biography. Many sites help with resume writing. Watch the format. Most larger companies use a database which has specific requirements, so follow them. You can get tips on my website www.hunterstar.com. The purpose of the resume is to get a foot in the door. Make sure you have NO errors, typos, missellings or illiteracies.

  2. Step 2

Before you submit your resume, make sure the title has your name first and last, in the document title. "my resume" or "jake 2008" does not work. Do one last spell check, have a trusted friend read it for clarity and completeness. Make sure it is saved in a format the company requests. Most databases are not ready to read Word 2007 docx format resumes. Do not submit in a pdf format. It cannot be read by most databases at all.

  3. Step 3

Read through the job you are applying for and keep in mind, "gee that sounds like fun" or "I could learn to do that" will not work. If they ask for specific skills, software proficiency, or minimum years of experience, do NOT apply unless you have that skill or experience.

  4. Step 4

Submit your resume. Once. Keep a log of which companies you have submitted to. If there is interest shown, be sure you research the company so you know what they actually do, and what they might want you to do.

Tips & Warnings
  • Recruiters are bombarded with resumes that do not fit requirements. They do not have time to respond to all.
  • If they have to reformat your resume, or translate it to a readable format, it takes time, and irritates them.
  • If you have a contact within the company, it is appropriate to ask that person to submit your resume. They may get a bonus check. But, make sure it is also online, because that is how companies keep track of applicants, for both their own requirements and EEO issues.
  • Do not assume because you fit all the characteristics that you will get the job. You may be one of 500 applicants.
  • Do not apply more than once to the same job. Do not apply to every job the company has posted.
  • Do not pester the recruiter about follow up. Many hiring authorities do not give feedback to a recruiter, and pestering that person will only make you less likely to get a job.
  • Best Wishes in your job search, it is NOT easy
