Things You'll Need:
- well written resume
- functional computer
- Internet access
- ability to follow directions
-
Step 1
Your resume is a sales document, not a biography. Many sites help with resume writing. Watch the format. Most larger companies use a database which has specific requirements, so follow them. You can get tips on my website www.hunterstar.com. The purpose of the resume is to get a foot in the door. Make sure you have NO errors, typos, missellings or illiteracies.
-
Step 2
Before you submit your resume, make sure the title has your name first and last, in the document title. "my resume" or "jake 2008" does not work. Do one last spell check, have a trusted friend read it for clarity and completeness. Make sure it is saved in a format the company requests. Most databases are not ready to read Word 2007 docx format resumes. Do not submit in a pdf format. It cannot be read by most databases at all.
-
Step 3
Read through the job you are applying for and keep in mind, "gee that sounds like fun" or "I could learn to do that" will not work. If they ask for specific skills, software proficiency, or minimum years of experience, do NOT apply unless you have that skill or experience.
-
Step 4
Submit your resume. Once. Keep a log of which companies you have submitted to. If there is interest shown, be sure you research the company so you know what they actually do, and what they might want you to do.
