Have you ever wondered if there is an easier way to peel a pearl onion? Here is how you peel off the skin. Blanching is popular with canning vegetables an the same technique can be used in onions, tomatoes and other skinned vegetables.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pearl onions
  • Pan
  • Water
  • Ice
  1. Step 1

    Place a pan of water on the stove to boil. While it is heating rinse off the pearl onions to get rid of the dirt that may be on them.

  2. Step 2

    Fill a bowl with ice & water and have it ready to cool the onions in once you remove them from the hot water.

  3. Step 3

    Place the pearl onions into the water for 30 seconds. Then remove them to the bowl of ice water immediately.

  4. Step 4

    The skin on the onion should peel right off. This is called blanching.

Tips & Warnings
  • Blanching is used to help preserve vegetables without their skins for canning.
  • Pearl onions can be used in many recipes.
  • Be careful not to burn yourself while dipping the onions from hot water to cold ice water.
