Smelly Jelly Air Freshener

This is a very easy and fun way to make an attractive product that will make your home smell wonderful! These also make excellent handmade gifts.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jelly Jars
  • Canning Lids or
  • Smelly Jelly Jar Lid
  • Water Crystals
  • Distilled or Boiled Water
  • Fragrance Oil
  • Soap or Food Coloring
  • Lace or Plastic Lid Covering
  • Alcohol
  1. Step 1

Boil your water for 5 minutes if not using distilled water. Wash and prepare your jelly jars for use. Place 1 teaspoon of the water crystals in each jar.

  2. Step 2

Measure 6 ounces of either distilled or boiled water and pour into each jelly jar once the water has cooled. Add 5 to 10 cc of fragrance oil to each smelly jelly jar. Add one teaspoon of alcohol to each jar to kill any bacteria or mold that might want to grow while the smelly jelly is in use.

  3. Step 3

Place 3-5 drops of soap or food coloring in the top of each jar then place the lids on the jars. Shake the jars vigorously until all the ingredients have been mixed thoroughly. Seal the jars with the lids. Allow the jars to sit for some time to allow the water crystals to absorb the water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Smelly jelly jars may be put on a tart warmer or potpurri warmer to increase the strength of their smell.
  • Once the crystals lose some of their water, add more water to the crystals and replace the lid give them a good shake, add a few drops of fragrance oil, and you can reuse these.
  • You can use the special lids that are shown in the picture above which are available or you can use regular canning jar lids and cut a circular piece of lace larger than the mouth of the jar. When you are ready to use the smelly jelly, remove the middle flat piece of the lid and replace it with the lace allowing the fragrance to come into the room.
