Store your user IDs and passwords in a safe place.

A typical Internet user uses one password for four different accounts, and 73 percent of Internet users reuse their Internet banking account password, according to Bundle. Reusing your passwords increases your risk of becoming a victim of identity theft. For your security, you should have a unique user ID and password for each account, but that may make it difficult to remember them all. Some simple tools can help you keep track of your user IDs and passwords.

Record all your user IDs and passwords on a piece of paper. Also note down the related URLs and phone numbers, if applicable. This way, hackers can't access your list of user IDs and passwords. Keep this piece of paper in a very safe place, away from a common area that anyone can access. Do not store it anywhere near your computer.

Utilize a password manager software. Such a program allows you to organize and save all your user IDs and passwords in one safe place, protected by one master password. The program may also be able to auto-fill your user IDs and passwords when you sign in to your accounts. There are both free and paid versions available. With some programs, you may be able to use the basic features for free, but have to pay for premium features. While hackers may be able to access such a program, using one is safer than reusing your passwords, according to Public Radio International.

Store your user IDs and passwords in your PDA or smart phone. Depending on the model, it may have password storage software. This way, a person would have to physically hold your smart phone and crack your master password to access your stored user IDs and passwords. If you use this method, you have to change all your user IDs and passwords if you lose the PDA or smart phone.
