Make Traditional, Costa Rican Brewed Coffee

Costa Rica is a lush and gorgeous culture that celebrates living and purity in life. Costa Rican agriculture cultivates and exports coffee beans internationally. Costa Rican beans have a rich, earthy taste and brewed, their quality becomes slightly sweet. Here is how to brew coffee like a true Costa Rican. It is a simple and tasty way to brew your (personalized) morning cup!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Finely Ground Coffee Beans
  • A Coffee Cup
  • Some Muslin Cloth
  • A Tea Infuser
  • Water
  • Your Thirsty Self!
  1. Step 1

    Purchase finely ground coffee beans.

(If you want to be particularly authentic, purchase beans imported from Costa Rica. Buy fair trade)! If you are purchasing your beans from specialty shops like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, you can actually grind the beans right in the shop.

  2. Step 2

    Boil some water.

  3. Step 3

Cut a 4x4'(or so) piece of muslin cloth.

  4. Step 4

Fit the cloth to the size and shape of your tea infuser.

  5. Step 5

Place 1-2 tablespoons of coffee grinds into your infuser.

  6. Step 6

Pour the boiling water through the strainer. Repeat with this water as many times as you feel necessary. When I was living in a home-stay during my time in Costa Rica, my host-mom poured the water through the coffee at least three times before drinking a cup.

  7. Step 7

    PURA VIDA!

Tips & Warnings
  • In Costa Rica, this method is done by pouring the water through a muslin pouch that is held fast to a particularly cute stand. (I have attached a picture, above, so you can see what this looks like and how it is used). Since I am sure it would be nearly impossible to find an affordable stand elsewhere, the infuser idea is an alternative. Any infuser will do, as will a tea pot that has a tea strainer as its cap. Be creative! However, remember to use the cloth, otherwise your coffee will be full of grinds.
  • Throw out grinds after ever use, or they will quickly mold.
