This article will provide a guideline on how to adjust an Edelbrock Performer Series carburetor.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screw Driver
  • Paper and Pencil
  1. Step 1
    Idle Speed Adjusting Screw
    Idle Speed Adjusting Screw

This step-by-step procedure assumes your vehicle will start, run and idle.

Start engine, let it warm up to operating temperature and make sure the choke is fully opened. Now set the engine speed so it will idle at about 800 RPM. Do this by adjusting the idle speed screw located near the throttle linkage. Turing the screw to the left decreases the speed, to the right will increase the idle speed.

  2. Step 2
    Mixture Screws
    Mixture Screws

Turn vehicle off. You will now record the original settings of the mixture screws. The mixture screws are the two large screws on the front of the carburetor. These screws have a flathead slot and are surrounded by a spring. Starting with the right screw, turn it clockwise counting your turns until it bottoms out. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN or you might damage the screw. Record the number of turns. Repeat this procedure for the left screw.

  3. Step 3

Now that you have recorded the mixture screws setting, set both screws using the highest number recorded. Example: If the left screw was 3 turns out and the right screw was 4 1/2 turns out, set both mixture screws to 4 1/2 turns out.

  4. Step 4

Start engine, let it warm up to operating temperature. Re-adjust the idle speed screw if needed to obtain approximately 800 RPM.

  5. Step 5

Now start turning the driver's side mixture screw clockwise slowly until the engine's idle starts to slow down, then back the mixture screw out one full turn.

  6. Step 6

Now start turning the passenger's side mixture screw clockwise slowly until the engine's idle starts to slow down, then back the mixture screw out one full turn.

  7. Step 7

Reset the idle speed to 800 RPM. You have now set the base idle and mixture for your Edelbrock carburetor. You can try and "tweek" your setting by going in or out with the mixture screws. Remember to adjust them a little at a time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turning the Mixture Screws clockwise will make the engine run lean, turning the mixture screws counterclockwise will make it rich.
  • If you are going to try and "tweek" your base settings, it is a good idea to record your base settings before attempting to tweek your settings.
  • Be sure to stay clear of moving fan and belts at all times!
