Nasty little fruit flies...
Nasty little fruit flies...

No matter how clean your house is, the chances are very good that you have fallen victim to a swarm of fruit flies at one time or another. As a matter of fact, many households attract fruit flies year after year. There is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to trap fruit flies while using things that you already have at home!

From Quick Guide: Get Rid of Fruit Flies
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup or so of wine, any kind will do. White or red.
  • Shallow bowl or mug
  • Clear plastic wrap/cling wrap
  • dish soap
  1. Step 1

Look around your home and try to find the area where the fruit flies seem to be coming from. Most times you will find swarms of fruit flies around your kitchen garbage, counter tops where food may have been left out or even your sink drains.

  2. Step 2

Once you find a good spot to place your fruit fly trap, set down your shallow bowl or mug in a flat area where it will not tip over or spill.

  3. Step 3

Any kind of wine will do...

Take the shallow bowl or mug and fill it with about a half cup of wine. Then squeeze in about 3-4 drops of your dish soap in the container and mix together. The smell of the wine will attract the fruit flies to the container and the dish soap will help to "do them in".

  4. Step 4

Finally, tightly cover your shallow bowl or mug with your clear plastic wrap and poke about six little openings in the top. This will allow the fruit flies to get in once they are attracted, but it will be hard for them to get back out. Before you know it, you will have dozens of fruit flies that fell victim to your trap and they will no longer be pestering you in your house!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have wine handy, fruit juices can do the same trick as they are left out in the container to ferment. The fruit flies will still be attracted, however it may take a day or two longer.
  • Be sure that you set the trap where it is out of reach of small children.
