How to Change a Car Battery

This article will help you change the battery in your vehicle.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Socket with extensions
  • Open-end wrench
  • Wire brush
  1. Step 1

    Open the hood and locate the battery. First, using a combination wrench, remove the negative (black) battery cable from the battery.

  2. Step 2

    Remove the positive (red) cable from the battery.

  3. Step 3

    Remove the clamp that holds the battery in with a socket. This is probably located towards the bottom of the battery. You may need ratchet extensions to remove the bolt.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the battery. Clean the terminals, the clamp, and the platform the battery sits on with a wire brush.

  5. Step 5

    Place the new battery on the platform and attach the clamp. Make sure the battery is tight.

  6. Step 6

    Attach the positive (red) cable first.

  7. Step 7

    Attach the negative (black) cable.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remove the old battery and take it with you to the store where you are buying the new battery. There is a core charge to take care of the old battery, but when you buy the new battery, they will remove the core charge.
