Oh, I'm sure I'll need that someday, just put it over there for now. Don't throw that away, it'll come in handy someday. Oh, you don't want that?, I'm sure I can find a use for it.....

And so on, and so on...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a space to fill
  • shortage of willpower
  • a hoarding mentality
  1. Step 1

Take it from a master, It does not take long to become overwhelmed by your collection of STUFF!

  2. Step 2

Find any excuse not to throw something away.
    - it could be valuable someday
    - "just in case" I need it later
    - I might not be able to get one of those again
    - but it reminds me of ...(fill in the blank)

  3. Step 3

Justify keeping something based on a noble premise.
    - I'll use that for a Cub Scout/ Girl Scout project
    - When I get enough saved up, I'll take it all down and donate it all at once (the "I'm saving gas" approach)

  4. Step 4

Re-arrange things in neat little piles, under the guise of "improving my organizational skills". This is a great technique to use for those mounds of paperwork (bank statements, newsletters, bills more than 7 years old) that you know need to be filed - eventually.

  5. Step 5

The corollary to the pile technique is to purchase (or otherwise obtain, like by rescuing from the side of the road) additional file cabinets that are intended to be used as receptacles of the sorted items from the previous step.

  6. Step 6

Ah, we just touched on a MAJOR method to accelerate the clutter process - the RESCUE. This may be executed by, as mentioned, grabbing something from the side of the road, or other trash-bound site. Yard sales and garage sales are a perfect feeding ground for this approach. The wealth of potential filler material is virtually unbounded, since those who are not similarly afflicted as you or I have realized that the CAN live their lives WITHOUT the object(s) you are willing to take off their hands!

  7. Step 7

Move the car OUT of the garage to make room for the additional junk (OH, did I say that?) that you have just brought home. Hey, the loan's almost paid off, so why try to protect the paint from sun & weather when it's just taking up space that could be used for more STUFF?

  8. Step 8

By now, I think you get the idea - and as I said earlier, it won't take long before you're peering over the top edge of a pile and looking for more room to fill.

  9. Step 9

If you know what's really good for you, ignore all of this nonsense and keep only the stuff you REALLY need. But, that's the topic of a different article!

Tips & Warnings
  • tag sales, yard sales, etc. provide a fertile ground to troll for more stuff
  • be sure to drive a station wagon, mini van, or semi-trailer to maximize your hauling capacity
  • piles that are too high may topple and fall - be sure to shore them up with buttress piles on each side
  • food is not such a great thing to try and collect - not only does it spoil and make your good stuff stink, over time your tastes may change
  • tunneling through your stuff isn't a good idea unless you're an engineer and can do it safely, according to code
