How to Create a Freelance Writer's Portfolio

The joys of being a freelance writer: writing samples are strewn about your desk or they may be hidden on computer discs and hard drives. And, soon they will be posted on the internet. It is time to get that work together so you can start pitching your services to potential clients. This isn’t the time to panic. Creating a freelance writer’s portfolio is not as difficult as you might think.

  1. How to Create a Freelance Writer's Portfolio

    • 1

Categorize your work. Separate your writing into different groups. These groups will vary, depending on the type of writing you do. Commercial, creative, non-fiction and poetry are just a few categories. Of course, you can create sub-categories as well. This is especially helpful if you are a commercial or creative writer. Group similar pieces together within an even smaller group such as brochures or essays.

    • 2

Select your best work from each of the categories. Your best work is not the work that you like the best or made you the most money. It is the work that will best show your range as a writer. If you are pitching to a specific company, make sure the work you includes meets the specific needs of that potential client.

    • 3

Check, double check, edit, re-edit, proofread and re-proofread the work you have selected for you portfolio. This can not be stressed enough. There can not be any errors in your work. Every word must be perfectly arranged. Your writing must be clear, concise, descriptive and fresh.

Choose the style of portfolio you want to use. Visit your local office supply store to pick out the portfolio you want. Some discount and online stores also offer portfolios. Be sure that the portfolio you select is not to big or heavy for your body type. Also, check all the fasteners to make sure they work properly. Make sure the portfolio coordinates with the briefcase that you use.

Arrange your work in your portfolio. Use your “creative liberties” here, but be sure to keep it professional. Many times you will have to talk about your work as you show your portfolio to potential clients. Your portfolio tells the story of your work. Make it flow in an organized and conversational manner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Enlist friends, family and other freelance writers to look over your portfolio.

  • Be prepared to adapt your portfolio as your needs change.

Good idea to post this, but I have to agree with others who pointed out numerous grammatical and spelling errors in your own post. I think you can fix these thru the editing options within eHow. Good luck!
