Create and Outline Numbered List in Microsoft Word 2003

Authors and editors greatly rely upon detailed outlines to compose documents. An outline is essential to the gathering of specific thoughts and the organization of them. Microsoft Word 2003 offers end users a variety of styles when creating and outlining numbers lists simply by choosing the desired style from the bullets and numberings options menu.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose your outline preferences. Click on “Format” and then select “Bullets and Numbering.”

  2. Step 2

Select the outline design. Click on the “Numbered” tab in the bullets and numbering options menu. Then click on the icon of the numbered list that you wish to use.

  3. Step 3

Create the list. Begin creating the list and every time that you press the return key, a new number will appear.

  4. Step 4

Use the list as an outline. To enter in specific thoughts and outlines within the list for a specific numbered entry, press the “Tab” key. This will create a sub-list within the list for an outline. Press the hotkeys “CTRL+SHIFT” to return back to the next number on the list and to continue making primary list entries.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the hotkeys “CTRL+SHIFT” to back-tab to an outline entry for the next entry.
  • Using the hard return will start a new paragraph.
