How to Apply for Medical Assistance in Pennsylvania
Medical assistance in Pennsylvania is a joint partnership program between the federal government and the state. It is popularly known as Medicaid. Medicaid can cover a variety of medical expenses and there are several eligibility requirements that need to be met for particular situations including income and age.

Determine if you are eligible. The state of Pennsylvania has specific eligibility requirements covering, age, income, disability, household resources, residency and citizenship that need to be met. These requirements vary with individual circumstances. See resources below to check on the requirements as they apply to you to see if you qualify for Pennsylvania Medicaid.

Apply online through COMPASS. COMPASS is the Pennsylvania Human Services website through which you can apply for state assistance including cash, child care, home heating assistance, school meals and medical assistance. COMPASS also has a series of steps that can help you determine eligibility.

Contact your county assistance office. If you do not have access to COMPASS or you are still unsure of whether you are eligible for Medicaid, call your county assistance office for help with your individual circumstances (see Resources below).

Download and fill out a paper application. After you have determined your eligibility and you decide to file a paper application, there is one available on the Department of Public Welfare website (see Resources below).

Wait for a decision. Once you are approved, you will be issued an ACCESS card to cover the medical service (physical health, mental health, dental services) for which you were approved. You can then provide to your healthcare provider at the point of service.
