Things You'll Need:
- Styrofoam balls, 2- or 3-inch size
- Styrofoam block, 2-inch size
- Gold or silver acrylic paint
- Gold or silver pipe cleaners
- Wire cutters
- Wooden skewer
- White glue
- Pencil and paper
-
Step 1
Paint your ball. Take your wooden skewer and carefully insert it partially into the Styrofoam ball. Then, using the wooden skewer as a handle, cover your ball completely in gold or silver acrylic craft paint. Stick the other end of the skewer into the Styrofoam block and let it dry.
-
Step 2
Plan your design. While waiting for the paint to dry, lightly sketch out your snowflake design on a piece of paper with a pencil. Each pipe cleaner will serve as a "branch" of the snowflake. If doing this craft with students, use this opportunity to teach them that snowflakes are symmetrical.
-
Step 3
Create the branches of your snowflake. Cut and bend silver or gold pipe cleaners into the shapes you desire for your snowflake. Arrange them flat on a table to see your pattern, until you are happy with your snowflake design.
-
Step 4
Insert the branches of the snowflake into the painted ball. To make each branch even more secure, use small sections of pipe cleaners to secure them. To do this, cut half-inch lengths of pipe cleaners and bend them into a "U" shape. Use these as "staples" to secure the branches by placing the end of the branch on the ball, and pressing the "staple" over it.
-
Step 5
Make a hook. Use one more length of pipe cleaner to form a hook or loop. Attach it to the ball in the same manner as the branches, then hang from a tree or garland.
