Book through the AARP. The American Association of Retired Persons has been offering discounts to its members for almost six decades, including booking Mediterranean cruises. The AARP's Travel Center uses the software and deals made by Expedia to increase member's savings. Discounts vary from time to time, but are often well below booking directly through Expedia or other online travel arrangement sites.

Book through AAA. The American Automobile Association has independent chapters in each state and offers discount travel rates for its members and even better discounts for seniors. The AAA can also help you arrange for transportation, travel insurance, and other amenities before embarking on the cruise.

Contact the cruise company's website. Cruise lines are often desperate for guests as departure date approaches. Companies such as Carnival and Princess cruises offer last-minute discounts that can cut the price significantly. Also, returning guests, seniors, and families often receive additional incentives to cruise with these companies.

Use SmartCruiser. A website specifically designed for persons 55 or older, SmartCruiser (see Resources below) offers discounts for senior citizens who book through its website. The discounts sometimes have restricted "black out" dates, however. Still the amount saved is well worth the travel restrictions, especially to the budget-conscious.
