How to Decide on a Hobby for Seniors

Retirement can mean more time to spend with family and friends or a chance to finally relax after a life of hard work. Still, some people find retirement to quickly loose its luster when boredom sets in. From relaxing pastimes to active obsessions, these few helpful hints and tips can make deciding on a fulfilling and entertaining hobby much easier.

Take up gardening. Gardening is perhaps one of the most time-consuming of all hobbies. Plants, vegetables, and even water gardens require careful planning and periodic maintenance. Vegetable and fruit gardening, in particular, can benefit both the psyche and the diet, but needs a vigilant eye to prevent pests and vermin. Water gardening can transform a bare corner of the yard into a breathtaking pool and waterfall, but also rquires upkeep and care for optimal success.

Take up birding. Bird watching, or "birding," can become an obsession for some folks. The starting materials are very cheap, requiring only a pair of binoculars and a field guide such as that put out by the Audubon Society (see Resources, below). Birding can be done without leaving the house as backyard birding requires only the addition of a bird feeder or bird bath to attract the neighborhood birds. Thousands of species in a riot of colors can be found in every part of the country, making birding an almost daily adventure.

Build a model. Models are not just kid stuff; they require meticulousness, an eye for detail, and above all patience. Every building, bridge, or car that exists today began as a concept model and that fact is reflected in the detailed model kits and accessories which are available to the model builder. For example, model wooden ships are often detailed down to the cloth sails, working rigging, and intricate mastheads and can easily take hundreds of hours to complete.

Take up fishing. There are as many ways to fish as there are places to fish. Fishing requires patience and skill that can only be acquired over time. Fly fishing, for instance, uses techniques and tackle that is peculiar to the sport but has become popular with outdoorsmen because of the skill involved. Hand tied flies and specialized tackle are almost a sport by themselves as anglers compete for the best tied fly or the most appropriate lure for the occasion. Other types of fishing include deep sea, ocean or "beach," and "cast and spin" fishing.

Research the family tree. Genealogy has become an incredibly popular hobby, and one that requires intellectual curiosity and patience. Genealogy requires delving into state, local, and even church archives as well as meticulous annotation in order to follow leads. With the majority of Americans coming from such a varied background, no two genealogy quests are every the same, leading to endless variety.
