Cigarette burns wreck havoc on carpets, particularly if they are located in a noticeable area. There is a solution to this problem besides replacing the carpeting or covering up the mark with furniture or a rug. It's fairly simple to patch a small burned area, and although it may not look exactly right up close, it will fool anyone who isn't inspecting the flooring.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small, sharp scissors
  • Fabric glue
  • Wax paper
  • Heavy book
  • Carpet brush
  1. Step 1

Find an out-of-the-way area on the carpeting, such as in a corner or underneath the sofa. Trim enough fibers from that area to fill the burned spot. The average cigarette burn requires no more than 10 fibers.

  2. Step 2

Trim away the burned fibers from the damaged spot. Smooth the area with your hand, removing fuzz and extra fibers.

  3. Step 3

Dribble a small amount of fabric glue into the hole. Hold the new carpet fibers vertically and place them firmly in the burned area. Hold them there for a moment, then let them go and make sure they stand up.

  4. Step 4

Place a square of wax paper on the patched area. Put a book on top of the paper and let it dry for about 24 hours.

  5. Step 5

Remove the book and wax paper and fluff the area with a carpet brush.

Tips & Warnings
  • This method only works for very small burns. For larger areas, call a professional.
