Clogged drains create a mess every time. However, it can be tough to find a drain cleaner in stores that prevents clogs and is noncorrosive. This homemade cleaning powder works like a dream. It breaks up and prevents drain clogs if used regularly, and the natural substances in this cleaner won't damage pipes or garbage disposals.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 2 cups salt
  • 1/2 cup cream of tartar
  • Jar with lid
  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  1. Step 1

Mix the baking soda, salt and cream of tartar together in a jar with a screw-on lid.

  2. Step 2

Write "drain cleaner" on a piece of masking tape with a maker. Stick the tape to the lid or side of the jar so that it is clearly labeled. Because the cleaner is a white powder, it could be confused for something else if it isn't labeled.

  3. Step 3

Boil 1 cup of water. Measure out 1/4 cup of the drain cleaner and pour it into the drain along with the lemon juice. Immediately add the boiling water to the mixture in the drain and let it sit for about 15 seconds.

  4. Step 4

Flush the drain with cold water for 30 seconds.

  5. Step 5

Repeat this drain-cleaning process once monthly for best results. Store the drain cleaner in a cool, dry place to avoid clumping.
