How to Add Color to a Black and White Photo Using Photoshop

You've probably seen many pictures that are mainly black in white but the person's eye color or shirt color is showing. This means that the photo has been digitally enhanced using a computer program. Adobe Photoshop is a great tool to do this. It's somewhat simple, quick and can add a nice touch to any image.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open Adobe Photoshop.

    • 2

In the top left hand corner, click on "File," then "Open" and open the image you wish to edit.

    • 3

Once the image has opened, at the top, click on "Layer" and then click "Duplicate Layer." A screen will pop up. Click "OK."

    • 4

Go up to "Window" and click it. Make sure that "Layers" is checked. If it is not, click on "Layers."

    • 5

In the "Layer" window, you will see two small thumbnails. Click on the "Background Copy" and be sure that you're not on the "Background" thumbnail.

    • 6

Go to "Image" and click on "Adjustments," then click "Desaturate." The image should turn black and white.

    • 7

From your toolbar, select the eraser tool. Use the tool to erase the black and white parts of the image to let color show through.

    • 8

Click on "Layer" and then click "Flatten Image." Save the image onto your computer.
