In jiu jitsu, chokes are often performed using the martial arts uniform called a "gi." The jiu jitsu under arm choke is an example of this. The gi helps the jiu jitsu fighter to hold onto the opponent and cut off the blood supply to the brain. The jiu jitsu under arm choke is effective because it can be sprung on an unsuspecting opponent without them realizing what you are doing. One second they are grappling with you on the ground. The next second they are passing out from the choke. It is also a versatile technique that can be performed from multiple positions.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wait until your opponent presses both hands against your chest. It doesn't matter whether you are on the top or the bottom. You need his arms in order to perform the jiu jitsu under arm choke.

  2. Step 2

Grab one of your opponent's gi lapels. Make this a same-side grab over the top of his arm. If you are using your left hand then clutch your opponent's right lapel. Pull it toward you. Your opponent will probably resist. This will open up his gi.

  3. Step 3

Loop your other arm around the outside of your opponent's other arm. Slide it across his chest and grab the opposite-side gi lapel that you just opened up. Grip it as close to your opponent's neck as you can and pull it across your body. This traps his arm.

  4. Step 4

Let go with the hand that first grabbed the gi. Continue to hold the gi tight with the other hand. Reach your just-released hand across your opponent's body and grab his gi at the side of his neck. Do this with a thumb-down overhand grab. Your arms are now crossed.

  5. Step 5

Press the knife edge of your thumb-down hand against your opponent's carotid artery in his neck. This is in the gap next to his Adam's apple.

  6. Step 6

Crank the choke. Pull both arms outward as you draw your opponent toward you. Raising your head makes this easier. This motion immediately cuts off your opponent's blood supply to his brain. He will either tap out or pass out within a few seconds.

Tips & Warnings
  • The jiu jitsu under arm choke is intended to be performed with a martial arts gi but it can also be used in a real-world fight. As long as your opponent is wearing a sturdy garment with lapels, like a jacket or a sport coat, the technique will work.
