Many people use their digital cameras to take photos of their friends and family, but not all of those images come out well. Turn a decent picture into a work of art by using photo-editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop. You can even use a film image by scanning it into your computer and creating a digital image from the scan. Using the watercolor filter can help you create a watercolor image in Photoshop from any photo you have taken.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a photograph you would like to use to create a watercolor image in Photoshop. You may choose any image that you like, though images with many vibrant colors look better when turned into a watercolor image. You may even try several photos until you find one that you think looks the best as a watercolor image.

  2. Step 2

Click the filter button along the top of the Photoshop editor then click on the filter gallery. The filter gallery allows you to see how all of the filters available can change the appearance of your photograph. If needed click in the bottom left of the filter gallery to bring up sizing options. Often clicking on "Fit in View" will help you better see what the final image will look like.

  3. Step 3

Look under the Artistic file folder just to the right of the window showing the image you are currently working with. Under the folder labeled Artistic, you will find a button called "watercolor". Press this button to create a watercolor image in Photoshop. The image in the viewing window to the left will be loaded as a watercolor image.

  4. Step 4

Use the slider bars to the far right to enhance the watercolor photograph. The brush detail slider allows you to adjust the amount of detail shown. Pushing the slider to the right adds more detail to the image but may also make the image look less like a watercolor. The shadow intensity slider makes the shadows darker or lighter and the texture slider lets you control how much texture you would like shown on your watercolor picture.

  5. Step 5

Finish the image by clicking the "OK" button and returning to the Photoshop editing screen. Make any other adjustments that you feel your image may need such as enhancing the color or cropping the picture for a better view. Once you create a watercolor image in Photoshop, you can use it in craft or scrapbooking projects or you can print it to hang on your wall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save the original image separately in case you are not satisfied with the way your watercolor image turns out.
