Old documents saved on your hard drive slow down the operating speed of your computer. Each week run a disk defragmentation and cleanup. This is a program built into your computer. To utilize it click on "Start" the "Programs", "Accessories," and "System Tools." By clicking on "Disk Defragmenter" you will maximize the efficiency of your computer and then complete a "Disk Cleanup" which will delete any files on your hard drive that are not used.

Install some anit-spyware software. If you have ever clicked on a pop up screen you may have installed some spyware on your computer. Spyware enables someone to monitor your activity online and use that information. By downloading and running some anit-spyware software (see Resources) you will eliminate devious individuals from tracking your moves on the Internet and possibly sabotaging your hard drive. Before you download anything such as screen savers or games it is always safe to run it by an Internet site that scans for spyware (see Resources).

Delete program icons. The program icons located next to the clock on your computer take up a lot of your computer's memory. This is memory that your computer needs in order to perform the math necessary for the programs to operate effectively. An easy fix is to go into each program and click on the "Options" or "Preferences" section and disable the "Start When Windows Starts" option. By doing this you will have to turn each program on individually when you wish to use them, but are giving more memory back to your computer. If the only icons you see next to the clock on your computer are your anti-virus, anti-spyware, and whatever program you are currently using then you're in great shape.

Avoid viruses. Viruses can completely zap your computer's hard drive. One out of every four email messages contains a virus, so never open an email from an unrecognizable sender. Also, avoid clicking on a link that promises to remove you from a list, by clicking on the link it represents an active email account and notifies other spammers which can lead to viruses.

Clean it up. Dust and pet hair can accumulate inside your CPU and damage cooling fans which results in important parts of your computer overheating. About twice a year remove the side screws on your CPU and shoot some compressed air inside to remove the build up. Compressed air can be purchased at most office stores.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are still leery about attempting these fixes yourself you may opt to consult a professional. The per hour rate for a professional is still less expensive than buying a new CPU in most cases. Find a computer repair expert in your area before just taking it anywhere for repairs (see Resources).
