However, if you are new to snowboarding, start with an "All Mountain" style of snowboard. Find a board that measures somewhere between your nose and chin when you stand it next to you and is just wide enough that your heels and toes come close to the edges but don't hang over.

Finding proper snowboard bindings will depend on the type of boots you choose. If you have soft boots, look for strap-on bindings. For boots you step into, likewise you will want step-in bindings. Finally, for hard boots go with plate bindings. Bindings come in small, medium or large, so you might want to ask for assistance buying your first set.

Try on several pairs of snowboarding pants before making a decision. You will be doing a lot of bending and twisting on the slopes, so make sure the pants allow you to do so. Wear a jacket that overlaps your pants to keep snow and cold air out. Find gloves that are waterproof and warm and fit snugly over your jacket sleeves. The gloves should not be bulky or make it difficult to use your hands and fingers.

Protect your head with a helmet. This is important for everyone but especially beginners. A warm scarf and safety goggles will round out your gear.
