Group your pictures so that either the tops or bottoms of each makes a continuous straight line. If you choose to array your pictures on a line from the top, make sure that the bottom of the largest picture is slightly above any furniture flush to the wall. Such a grouping is appropriate for four to six pieces. The center of most pictures should be about 5½ feet from the floor.

For more pieces, hang them using a combination of the two methods described above. For example, if you are hanging eight paintings, have four of them with their tops at the same height from the ceiling, and the other four equidistant from the floor. You will end up with an interesting, yet orderly, grouping of pictures.

Consider using the mosaic, or hodge-podge, method of arranging your artwork. This calls for a lot of creativity, but it can make for a disorderly array of pictures if you are not careful. Display your pictures in whatever grouping appeals to you, and you may be excited by the outcome. If you are worried about creating clutter, center some of the pictures, or align some at the bottom or top of the array.

Choose an area where you want to display your art, then envision the space as a square or rectangle. Hang each of the four largest pictures first by filling each corner of the area you've chosen. Use the smaller pictures to fill the middle of the array. You will end up with a mixture of sizes and shapes, but they will be contained in an orderly way.

Arrange your pictures diagonally if they are to be placed on a stairway. Imagine a diagonal line that's parallel with your staircase, then use that line for centering your artwork. In creating the line, make sure that it is about 5½ feet above each of the steps.
