How to Start a Movie Watching Club

Movie watching clubs provide a fun, informal way for friends and family members to get together and enjoy an activity together. Movie nights can be held on the spur of the moment or can be pre-arranged, depending on the members’ wishes. The club might focus on a particular type of movie or could explore a different category each time a meeting is held. Club screenings can be held in members’ homes or at a movie theater.

Instructions

    • 1

Mention your idea to friends and ask if they would be interested in joining a movie watching club. Invite family members and co-workers to join. Ask neighbors or anyone you think would be a good fit for the club. Before you begin asking people to join the club, decide if you want the club to be a mixed group or a single sex group. If you plan on primarily watching chick flicks, you may not find too many men interested in the club and it may be better to limit the group to women only.

    • 2

Set up a time when everyone can get together. Weekend nights will work well for people with traditional 9am to 5pm jobs, but you may have to be creative with days and times to include people who work other hours.

    • 3

Decide where you will watch a movie. You may want to rent a DVD or two and get comfortable at a member’s house. You’ll save money and will be able to socialize before and after the movie. If there is a first-run movie that the group is interested in seeing, you may want to head to your local movie theater.

    • 4

Designate one person to handle the details for movie night. Ask her to call or email members and tell them what movie you will be watching and the location, date and time. Discuss how you will handle refreshments and decide if everyone will bring a food item or if you will take up a collection to pay for refreshments.

    • 5

Include time for discussion after the movie. Depending on how many members of the group are avid movie watchers, this portion of the club could take an hour or more to complete or could be over in fifteen minutes. Prepare a few prompts for discussion. Ask questions about specific characters and how they moved the plot along or ask if the movie ended as the members expected.

    • 6

Schedule the next movie watching club night before everyone leaves. Plan to hold the meeting at a date and time that will be acceptable to the majority of club members. Decide what movie you will watch next.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order to devote your attention completely to the movie, make the club meetings for adults only. If someone absolutely must bring children, be sure to have plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied and avoid watching “R” rated movies that evening.
