Early voting in Indiana begins four weeks before an election and it is open to all citizens who are registered to vote. Voting early is a wonderful privilege and in Indiana you do not have to prove that you have a conflict on election day. You can vote early if you're going out of town, have appointments already on election day, or if you've simply made up your mind and want to get it over with.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Absentee application (available at the voting site)
  • ID with proof of current address
  1. Step 1

Find your early voting site on the official website (see Resources). Note that most often you will cast your ballot at your local county clerk's office.

  2. Step 2

Find a copy of the absentee application when you get to the clerk's office. You will have to fill out this very brief form in order to vote early.

  3. Step 3

Get in line and be prepared to give a copy of identification with proof of your current address. For most people, a driver's license is fine. If you have recently moved to the area, however, you will need a document that proves you reside at your current address.

  4. Step 4

Follow the clerk's instructions after they check your documentation. Someone should walk you to a ballot and show you how to operate it if it is electronic or mechanical.

  5. Step 5

Wear your "I Voted!" sticker proudly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Schedule some extra time for this process. So many people have begun taking advantage of early voting that the county clerk's office are often unprepared for the volume. You may have to wait in line for awhile.
