Standard Crab Trap

Crab Traps are used to catch crabs in the sea. A baited trap is placed on the sea floor. The crab enters and is unable to leave. Eventually, the fisherman hauls up the trap and removes the crabs. There are many varieties and sizes of crab trap in use. The most common resembles a cage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Welded Wire Fencing 1 inch x 1 inch
  • Snap rings
  • Rope
  1. Step 1

Obtain a roll of welded wire fencing 1 inch x 1 inch. You will use this wire to make something that looks like a cage or trap. Cut off a section of wire 1 foot x 16 inches. Cut off a second piece 1 foot by 2 feet.

  2. Step 2

Bend the first piece into the shape of a bracket. The upturned ends should each rise about 2 inches from the body of the piece. bend the second piece into a rough semicircle. Each end should stand up about 6 inches.

  3. Step 3

Join the two pieces together with the snap rings. You should have a roughly barrel shaped device. Cut 2 more pieces of wire to use as doors. These will fit over the open sides of your trap.

  4. Step 4

Attach the doors with some snap rings. Tie a length of rope to the top of one of the doors. Run the rope across the top of the trap to the the other door. Bring the rope down to the bottom of the door and draw it through the mesh and back up to the top. This end of the rope should reach up to the surface of the water when your trap is in use. You will now be able to pull this door closed if a crab is inside.

  5. Step 5

Bait your trap. Drop it into water frequented by crabs. Crabs entering through the small open doorway will not be able to find their way out of the crab trap.

Tips & Warnings
  • For crab bait, try using small pieces of eel or shad. You can also use chicken or turkey necks.
  • Do not lose track of your trap. Secure a float or other marker to the top of the trap.
