Nothing beats the look of a beautifully lit Christmas tree topiary when decorating for Christmas. Placed on a fireplace mantle, table or on either side of the front door, they add a touch of elegance and Christmas cheer to your home. They are also a drain on your wallet, as they can tend to be very expensive to purchase. If you would like to get the lit Christmas tree topiary look for less, then read on to find out how you can make a miniature lit Christmas tree out of recycled wire coat hangers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A large amount of twist ties, or use yarn or string
  • A small strand of Christmas lights
  • Two or three thick Christmas garlands
  • Small ornaments of your choice
  • Six wire coat hangers

How to Create a Christmas Tree out of Coat Hangers

  1. Step 1

Group the hangers. Put them into three groups of two and tie one of the corners together in each group, using the twist ties or yarn. Arrange the pairs of hangers together with the hooks in the middle, and tie together. You should have a tripod at this point, with the hooks hanging down in the middle.

  2. Step 2

Spread out the pairs of hangers so that you have all six of them fanning out. It should look like the frame of a tree at this point, with the hooks sticking out at the bottom. Secure each hook to the wire hanger next to it to make your tree more stable.

  3. Step 3

Add the lights. Let the plug dangle down the middle of the tree so that the first light after the plug is at the top of the tree. Fasten the plug to the bottom of the tree (leave it as long as you like) with a twist tie.

  4. Step 4

Wrap the lights around each hanger. You can use a longer strand if you want the lights to be closer together. Secure the lights with twist ties or yarn occasionally.

  5. Step 5

Add the garland. Starting at the top of the tree, wrap the garland around it. Secure it at the top and let a bit of it dangle down the middle of the tree. Try not to leave any gaps. Poke any lights that aren't showing through the garland. Hang small ornaments of your choice, then plug it in and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use silver garland and white lights for a more formal or modern look.
  • Use realistic garland and colored lights for a more natural look.
