How to Snowboard Moguls

Moguls are often a snowboarder's worst enemy. Unlike skiers who can pivot at the ankles, snowboards require much wider-turning angles, making carving between moguls difficult and often painful. At some point, no matter how much you avoid it, you'll probably find yourself facing a slope full of moguls. It's best to learn the basics, so that you can attempt navigation. After some practice, you may even become skillful and enjoy riding moguls.

Instructions

    • 1

Visualize your best line. Before you start riding, look around for the line that contains smaller, softer moguls. Often you'll find a better line along the edges of the slopes, where fewer skiers and snowboarders carve out moguls.

    • 2

Take it slowly. Snowboarding moguls is about control, not speed. Begin slowly and make tight, focused carves to keep from losing control and barreling over moguls that may send you crashing.

    • 3

Focus on your line. Keep your eyes on the best path to navigate between moguls and let your eyes lead the way.

    • 4

Keep it loose. Don't plant your weight too hard on any one foot, and be prepared to kick out your feet as needed to negotiate around each mogul.

    • 5

Make tight carves. Ride between moguls with precise, purposeful carves. You will need to transfer quickly from toeside to heelside edge.

    • 6

If you end up riding over a large, hard mogul, relax and let the slope of the mogul guide you. Don't attempt to stop suddenly or carve drastically. Stay cool and ride it out while still focusing on your line ahead.

    • 7

Take breaks. If you get tired or are having trouble establishing rhythm, sit down and take a break. Get back up when you've had the chance to let your legs rest and try it again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practicing moguls can be an excellent way to gain carving skills and control. As you progress, practice increasing your speed and tightening your line. Then move on to bigger, more challenging moguls.

  • You should be an advanced snowboarder, able to precisely stop and carve, before attempting moguls. If you're not comfortable, find another way down.
