Rosehips

Making your own perfume from rose hips can be both practical and enjoyable. You can create your own signature scent or make a vial to give to a special friend. Because of their medicinal qualities, rose hips are widely used by aromatherapy experts in making skin care products and perfume. They have nutritional value as well as a natural source of vitamin C. Rose hips are the casings or pods that hold rosebush seeds. They are usually what’s left after rose petals have fallen off or been picked. Pure rose hip oil, called rose mosqueta, is very expensive to produce as it must be cold-pressed from a large quantity of rose hips. As a result, the concentrated oil with its rich scent, cool aroma and distinctively feminine tones is used in small amounts to make perfume blends and signature fragrances. To make your own custom-made perfume from rose hips, use high-quality ingredients and this basic recipe.

Instructions

  1. Before You Begin

    • 1

The day before you make the perfume, wash the bottles and droppers in warm soapy water followed by a light rinse in hot running water to remove the soap. All bottles and utensils used in making your perfume must be perfectly clean and completely dry or it will spoil.

    • 2

Soak the clean equipment in a boiling water bath for five to 10 minutes, and then carefully remove and let air dry overnight.

    • 3

Before mixing, cover your work surface with a plastic tablecloth. Place your clean bottles and utensils on the work surface along with paper towels or napkins in case of spills.

    Making the Perfume

    • 4

Gently place 30 drops of the rose hip oil in the plain ¼ ounce glass bottle.

    • 5

Using another dropper, carefully add the perfume diluent or perfumer’s alcohol to the oil. These fixatives will help to stabilize the scent, preserve the perfume, and make it last longer on your skin. Continue to fill with diluent until it covers ¾ of the bottle.

    • 6

Seal the bottle tightly and shake lightly to mix. Smell the fragrance to determine if it meets with your expectations. For a stronger fragrance, add additional rose hip oil one drop at a time up to a maximum of 40 drops and then cover and shake again.

    • 7

If the mixture is cloudy, blend in more diluent one drop at a time until clear.

    • 8

Using the funnel, transfer the perfume to the ¼ ounce decorative glass or porcelain bottle. Seal tightly, label and record the date the perfume was created.

    • 9

Allow the perfume to age for two days in a linen closet or other dark area away from direct light. This will give it time to fully develop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to buy 100% rose hip oil for best results when making the perfume.

  • Apply the rose hip perfume sparingly. According to the Fragrance Foundation in New York, every person has a personal scent circle about an arm’s length from the body. When wearing perfume, no one should be able to smell it unless he or she is inside your scent circle.

  • Combine the rose hip oil with other complimentary essential oils like lavender for a unique perfume blend.

  • Do not use metal containers or utensils in making your perfume. The chemical reaction that is produced when metal comes in contact with the essential oil may significantly impact the scent.
