How to Spend a Day on St Simons Island, Georgia

Located east of Brunswick and accessible by a causeway to the island, visitors will enjoy a step back in time to a slower way of life, relax on beautiful beaches and explore historic landmarks, a lighthouse and churches. Outdoor enthusiasts can also fish, play golf or kayak the Frederica River or Hampton River to Little St. Simons Island.       Stop at the St. Simons Island Visitor Center at 530 B-Beachview Drive. Pick up maps, brochures and information on what to do, where to go, attractions, dining, ongoing events, shopping and entertainment. Ask about the island's best beach access, available facilities, swimming and parking. If it's a pleasant day, you'll want to spend a little time in the surf. The center will also help you with a number of tours that will best suit your interests and time such as nature, driving and ghost tours as well as one on the island's African American history. There are over a dozen art galleries in the downtown district that visitors will enjoy exploring.

      Drive to the north end of St. Simons Island and visit 1884 Christ Church, located on Frederica Road. Alos visit the Epworth by the Sea Christian Conference Center, built in 1880, and the eighteenth-century Fort Frederica National Monument, which also has an interesting museum shop. If time permits, stop in at the Mildred Huie Museum, an art gallery for the island's legendary impressionist painter. Visit the 1872 St. Simons Lighthouse and museum located in the center of the island. Climb its 129 steps to the top for a spectacular view of Jekyll Island and neighboring islands.

      Visit St. Simons Island Village on Mallory Street, within sight of the lighthouse. It features a public fishing pier. It's a major hub of the island with shops, a variety of restaurants, a children's playground at Neptune Park and picnic facilities. Consider visiting St. Simons Island during one of its popular festivals and events, such as summer concerts at the Village Pier, the Farmer's Market, Downtown Promenade and the Downtown Street Fair.
