Instructions

    Becoming a Graphic Designer

  1. Step 1

While you are in high school, look at schools that are geared toward art and graphic design. Excellent art schools can be found worldwide. Go to the link below for a list of accredited graphic design programs and art schools.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of schools that you are interested in. Request information on the schools online, or by calling the contact information listed on the schools' website. Apply to the schools that you are interested in.

  3. Step 3

Once you have been accepted to schools and decided which school you are going to attend, dedicate yourself to getting the most out of your education. Make sure you do the best in all of your classes. Start looking for companies that are hiring or looking for interns.

  4. Step 4

Apply for a position as an intern at any graphic design businesses in the area. If you cannot immediately get an internship, apply for any positions that you may be qualified for such as a receptionist or secretary to get your foot in the door. If you are working or interning at a graphic design business, you are more likely to get a job straight out of school.

  5. Step 5

Once you have completed school, apply for a position at places that are hiring. If you mention your internship in your resume, you will be more likely to get hired. Talk about what you learned during your internship or employment with other graphic designers.

  6. Step 6

Begin work. Once you have secured a position as a graphic designer you will be expected to act professionally and complete jobs in the real world. Use your education and experience to help guide you through your career.
