How to Do an Overarm Bear Hug Throw in Martial Arts
Attackers who are larger and stronger than their intended victims often use an overarm bear hug in an attempt to gain control. It can be very effective, since the attacker restricts the movement of the arms, preventing the victim from using them to strike back. The attacker can also pick up the victim and squeeze the air out of him. The overarm bear hug throw allows the victim to escape and inflict some pain on the attacker.

1
Realize that the attacker is attempting an overarm bear hug. It is almost always attempted by someone bigger and stronger than you. It wouldn't make sense for someone smaller or weaker to wrap his arms around you in this way. If a larger person reaches around as if to hug you over your arms, he is attempting an overarm bear hug, and you must initiate your throw immediately.

2
Press both hands against the attacker's hips. Move your fingers outward and your thumbs up and push the attacker's hip bones with your palms. This is extremely important, since the overarm bear hug depends on moving the victim close to the attacker so the victim can be lifted. Pressing against the attacker's hips prevents her from doing this.

3
Lower your center of gravity. Drop your hips below the level of the attacker's hips. This is usually quite easy, since the attacker is probably bigger than you anyway. Bend both knees while keeping your back straight.
-
4
Spin around inside the attacker's grasp. To turn around, use the space you opened up with your push of the attacker's hips. Move your right foot just inside the attacker's right foot and your left foot just inside his left foot. Both feet should face in the same direction as the attacker. You will have your back to him, with both knees bent so you are beneath his center of gravity.

5
Allow one arm to move around the attacker's back as you spin. This is a natural motion you will probably perform without thinking about it. Use your other hand to grab the attacker's elbow. Your torso will be twisted in relation to your legs.
-
6
Pop your hips up to throw the attacker. Straighten both knees in an explosive motion. Since you are under the attacker's center of gravity, throwing her is quite easy. At the same time, straighten your torso to pull the attacker over your body. She will land hard on her back or side.
