How to Tap a Button Faster in Video Games
Can't get past the first event in Track & Field? Having trouble surviving the torture section in Metal Gear Solid? If your button-tapping skills are lacking, there's no need to go out and buy a rapid-fire controller. Here are two methods--for one and two hands--that will make you the fastest button-presser around.
Instructions
-
The Two-Handed Approach
-
1
Put the controller down in front of you, on a steady surface where you can reach the buttons.
-
2
Hold your two index fingers, side by side, roughly 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch over the button you want to press.
-
-
3
Tap the button using alternating fingers. Start slowly if you need to--the key is to make steady, even presses.
The One-Handed Approach
-
4
Put the controller down in front of you, on a steady surface where you can reach the buttons.
-
5
Hold your index finger over the button you want to press, but slightly closer to you, so your finger is coming down at roughly a 70-degree angle.
-
6
Bend your finger index slightly and press your thumb to it at the joint of your fingertip. This adds stabilization.
-
7
Clinch your remaining three fingers and tense up your entire arm until it vibrates slightly.
-
8
Lower your finger to the button, pressing it rapidly as your finger vibrates.

Tips & Warnings
The two-handed approach is easier and more relaxed. Use the one-handed approach when you need your other hand to press or hold other buttons.
Avoid prolonged use of the one-handed approach, as it can put undue stress on your arm.
