Type of Floor Cleaner to Use on Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is an excellent alternative to hardwood, ceramic, vinyl and stone. Laminate is durable, easy to install and even easier to clean. With so many different styles and colors to choose from, you are certain to find the laminate that looks the best in your house. Finding the right cleaning products for your laminate isn't difficult. Using the right products is vital to keeping up a streak-free shine.

Things You'll Need

  • Broom
  • Dust mop
  • Vacuum
  • Cloth
  • Mop
  • Swiffer mop
  • Microfiber mop
  • Swiffer sheet
  • Vinegar
  • Alcohol
  • Dish soap
  • Top sheen floor cleaner
  • Windex
  • Remove loose dirt and debris by sweeping, dust mopping, or vacuuming the laminate floor.

  • Damp mop the laminate floor using just water. Do not use too much water, as this can cause the floor to swell. Wipe the floor down with a dry cloth after mopping.

  • Fill a spray bottle with water and add 1/4 cup of vinegar. Spray the entire floor. Using a damp terrycloth mop, wipe up the liquid. Swiffer sells a mop that comes with cloths that are pre-soaked in vinegar.

  • Purchase a microfiber mop, which requires no cleaning solution at all. Occasionally wipe the floor with a top sheen floor cleaner to enhance the shine.

  • Clean a laminate floor using 1/3 water, 1/3 rubbing alcohol, 1/3 vinegar and 4 drops of dish soap. Spray it on. Wipe it with either a damp mop or a damp sponge. Laminate floors dry quickly with this solution.

  • Spray Windex on your laminate floors. Wipe it up using Swiffer sheets attached to a Swiffer mop. The ammonia in the Windex dries the floor fast.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use vacuum cleaner attachments to get dirt between the laminate planks and around the edges.
  • Place door mats in entryways and hallways to collect dirt and moisture.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring powders, or other abrasives on a laminate flooring.
  • Do not use soap detergents or floor wax on a laminate.
