How to Relate to Co-workers

Sometimes we spend more time with our co-workers than with our own family. Therefore, wouldn’t it make sense to pay more attention to and strengthen our relationships with our co-workers? By following some of these basic principles you can build healthy work relationships.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask yourself if you genuinely want to have better relationships with your co-workers or if you see yourself as just one more employee at work. Building better relationships with your co-workers requires time and effort, so if you are just “going through the motions” at work, you will resent having to put in the time and effort to relate to your co-workers.

Look for the best in people. If you are looking for good qualities among those you work with, you will want to build a healthy relationship with them. Once you realize your co-workers are good people, you will be more likely to accept them into your personal space and thus set the building blocks for a better relationship.

    • 3

Look for ways to help others. Once you notice someone’s good qualities, you are bound to notice the other “not-so-good” ones. Find out if you can help your co-workers in areas where they may be lacking certain office skills. Sometimes help can come in the form of a smile and everyone in the office will appreciate you for it.

    • 4

Be patient and understanding of others. Not everyone is built the same way and some individuals are harder to figure out than others. If you find someone at work who does not seem to have any good qualities or does not show any signs of appreciation towards your goodwill, give this person time. Most people eventually come around to say thank you.

Put your heart into building better relationships with your co-workers. When you put your heart into something, you come across as a radiant and positive individual. Everyone will notice the new you and will want to share part of your enthusiasm. The result will be a happier and friendlier work environment.
