There are many reasons to sell a car to a junk yard. If the vehicle is totaled or not worth repairing, it’s better to let the junk yard recycle it. By doing this, you make some money and minimize polluting the environment. If you live in Chicago and need to sell your car to the junk yards, here’s what you need to do.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact a junk yard like Robbins Auto Salvage, Inc. This junk yard is located at 5900 S. Damen Ave., in Chicago. They are open Monday through Saturday. Their phone number is (773) 925-6100.

  2. Step 2

Fill out the online request form, if they have one, to have your vehicle picked up. Most junk yards will contact you within 48 hours after hearing from you. Towing is generally free, but some junk yards deduct the towing fee from the amount they pay for the car, so find out ahead of time.

  3. Step 3

Sign your title over. If you don’t have the title, most places will have the legal forms available. You simply fill them out to release you of any liability. Otherwise, you can obtain the forms from the local licensing department.

  4. Step 4

Find out whether all the parts and components will be recycled. If you’re concerned about the environment, choose a junk yard that recycles--most of them do. You’ll receive a certificate outlining how components and parts are disposed of.

  5. Step 5

Avail yourself of sites like Local.com. This is a junk yard directory. Enter your city and state, and you’ll receive an extensive list of junk yards in that area. Online resources such as this one allow you to call several junk yards to compare their rates.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your junk car has parts that are in good condition, such as seats, dashboard and door panels, you may take them off and sell them separately for parts. Advertise them in the local paper or online. You can always sell the rest of the car for scrap metal.
