How to Help Needy People at Christmas

Inevitably, someone in your town or city will moan "not another sweater" in dissapointment as they open gifts on Christmas morning. Perhaps you received or gave a Christmas gift that ended up on a shelf collecting dust--only to end up in the trash the following year. The next time you receive an article of clothing that you will not wear, consider the many needy families that would embrace such a gift--without holes or stains--this Christmas. There are many ways to help needy people at Christmas. In order to give the gift of warmth and compassion, you have to find reputable organizations that can help you to help those in need. Here are 5 steps that you can take to make Christmas memorable for a needy person.

  • Help homless people by fulfilling their "wish list." The Homeless Partners Christmas Wish List (see Resources below) connects homeless people with their community. Read the personal stories of homeless people in your community and find out how you can grant their wishes this Christmas.

  • Donate a Christmas gift to an innocent child of incarcerated parents. Get your school or church affiliated with Angel Tree (see Resources below) to make sure that the children of imprisoned men and women receive a Christmas gift this Christmas.

  • Make a donation to Toys for Tots (see Resources below). You can choose to donate money, toys, or a vehicle to ensure that needy children do not go without a gift this Christmas.

  • Help elderly people confined to nursing homes and hospitals. While many of these people have families, they do not get to see them at Christmas. When you make a donation to the National Holiday Project (see Resources below), you are helping to make travel arrangements possible. Donations make it possible for the elderly to reunite with their loved ones.

  • Donate new clothing and toys to Brighter Beginnings (see Resources below). Brighter Beginnings assists low-income families with food, clothing, diapers and toys for children.
