Angels are symbols of peace, love and protection. You can make an angel which can be hung as a Christmas ornament, a guardian angel symbol over a restless child's bed or placed in an angel collection. This angel project is made in two parts. Make several of them, all in different pastel shades. You could also make a smaller version and cut out a heart pattern along with the angel body and make a garland of angels for the tree or mantle piece.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 clear sheet of plastic canvas
  • 1 clear 6 inch heart plastic canvas
  • Pastel colored yarn for gown
  • Yarn in your color choice for face, arms and hair
  • 1 package metallic needlepoint yarn for plastic canvas
  • large eye needle
  • Gold or silver metallic fiber for belt
  1. Step 1

Find an angel shape that you like from a book, cookie cutter or free Internet coloring pages. Cut out the angel pattern and trace on to the plastic canvas with a washable marker. She should be between 8 and 12-inches long.

  2. Step 2

Start by stitching the face area first. Embroider the face with short running stitches. Next, use the same color to stitch the arms and hands.

  3. Step 3

Fill in the entire angel body, gown and hair with the continental stitch in colors of your choice. Finish off by doing the over cast stitch completely around the angel. Use cording or ribbon for belt.

  4. Step 4

Fill in the wings with metallic needlepoint yarn using long stitches from the center of the heart outward. This gives an iridescent effect to the wings.

  5. Step 5

Add a cord for hanging in the center of the top of the wings. Tie securely.

  6. Step 6

Use mono-filament or heavy duty thread to tack the wings securely to the angel body. Be sure stitches are hidden under the yarn stitching.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can hand stitch small pearl beads or tiny satin ribbon roses to the wings with mono-filament.
  • Do not stitch wings to the angel before filling both pieces with stitching. It would be too hard to stitch the angel through double layers.
