Things You'll Need:
- Liquid liver extract
- Vitamin C
- Barley grass or wheat grass
- Nettle, red clover and burdock root dried herbs
-
Step 1
Feed your dog meat. The protein in turkey, lamb, beef and chicken helps produce more red blood cells. Check with your vet for the amount of meat appropriate for your dog.
-
Step 2
Give liquid liver. A raw liver extract can help relieve anemia, because it contains nutrients such as iron and B-complex vitamins that are important to healthy blood. Check with your vet before giving liver extract to your dog; it can be harmful if the animal has a liver disorder. Liver extracts can be purchased from some vets and at health-food stores.
-
Step 3
Feed the dog some greens. Chlorophyll can help his body produce healthier blood. Barley grass and wheat grass contain concentrated forms of chlorophyll, and dogs like the taste. Mix 1/4 tsp. in your dog's food if it weighs less than 15 lbs. Larger dogs can have 1 to 2 tsp. per day.
-
Step 4
Give the dog Vitamin C. Vitamin C assists in absorbing blood-building iron from the intestines. If your dog weighs less than 15 lbs., give her 250mg twice a day. Pets weighing over 15 lbs. can take up to 1,000mg per day.
-
Step 5
Put herbs on the menu. Nettle, red clover and burdock root contain valuable nutrients, minerals and iron. They can strengthen the liver, which cleanses the blood, and assist in producing red blood cells. Once a day, give the dog 1 tbsp. for every 30 lbs. he weighs. Pets don't like the taste of burdock root, so be prepared to mix all three dried herbs together for a different taste.
