If you are looking for a healthier way to feed your parrot while ensuring that he is eating wholesome items of your choosing, then making your own parrot food mix may be the way to go. All of the ingredients can be found in your local grocery store, and the combinations of mix that you can create for your parrot are endless.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dried fruit
  • Assortment of nuts
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Gallon-sized freezer bag
  • 1-cup scoop
  1. Step 1

Purchase dried fruit from your local grocery store. Variety bags, as well as bags containing separate types of fruit, are readily available. Choose dried fruits that you think your bird would enjoy, being sure to read the ingredients on variety packs and avoid those that have avocadoes as an ingredient. Avocadoes are lethal to parrots.

  2. Step 2

Gather an assortment of nuts and seeds from your local grocery store. Parrots love just about any type of nut, and some favorites are peanuts, hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds. A main staple in most parrot mixes are sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds are also a welcome addition to any parrot diet. Choose any nuts and seeds that are available, but make sure that they all state that they are “unsalted.” A high-salt diet is not good for anyone, let alone your precious parrot.

  3. Step 3

Cut the dried fruit into manageable pieces for your parrot. Dried fruit can be a bit large and bulky in size; cutting them up into manageable pieces for your parrot to eat will eliminate waste and save you money.

  4. Step 4

Pour approximately a cup of each of the purchased items into a gallon-sized freezer bag. For example, if you have purchased sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried fruit and an assortment of nuts, scoop about a cup of each one into the plastic bag.

  5. Step 5

Seal the bag and give it a shake. Stirring up the ingredients by shaking the sealed bag will distribute the contents evenly, and ensure that your parrot gets a variety of each item every time you feed him your homemade parrot mix.

Tips & Warnings
  • Adding some parrot pellets to your homemade parrot food mix will help to ensure he is eating a well balanced diet.
  • Dried chili peppers are a treasured treat for parrots, and adding some of them to your parrot mix will make it even tastier.
  • Avoid adding any dried fruit to the parrot mix that contains apple seeds or any kind of fruit pits. Apple seeds are toxic if ingested by your parrot.
