The name "Messiaen's Truncated Mode 3 Inverse Augmented" may sound complicated, but it is a fairly straightforward scale to play. It has many melodic possibilities. Try this scale the next time you solo or improvise. Messiaen's Truncated Mode 3 Inverse Augmented scale also affords a great finger exercise that is appropriate for guitarists of all skill levels.

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  1. Step 1

    To begin Messiaen's Truncated Mode 3 Inverse Augmented scale, place your second finger on the fourth fret of the G string. This is the root note.

  2. Step 2

    Move to the B string and play the third fret with your first finger. This is D, the second degree of the scale.

  3. Step 3

    Slide your first finger to the fourth fret of the B string. This is D sharp, the third degree of Messiaen's Truncated Mode 3 Inverse Augmented scale.

  4. Step 4

    Remain on the B string and play the seventh fret with your fourth finger. This is F sharp, the fourth degree of the scale.

  5. Step 5

    Move to the E string and play the fourth fret with your first finger. This is G sharp, the fifth degree of the scale.

  6. Step 6

    Play the E string at the seventh fret with your fourth finger. This is B, the sixth degree of Messiaen's Truncated Mode 3 Inverse Augmented scale.

  7. Step 7

    To complete Messiaen's Truncated Mode 3 Inverse Augmented scale, play Steps 6 through 1 in reverse order until you again reach the root note.
