How to Make a Boat
There are many techniques to build a boat. All but a few are difficult or impossible for the average hobbyist to use. Fiberglass construction and wood planking are both expensive and difficult if you don't have any experience in building a boat. Make it easy on yourself. Build a plywood boat using the stitch-and glue method for your first project.

1
Decide what type of boat you want. Are you interested in building a rowboat, canoe, motorboat, or something else? How many people to you want it to be able to hold? Are you planning on using it in rough waters, a calm lake or river?
-
2
Investigate different methods of boatbuilding. The most common method for beginning boatbuilder is the stitch-and-glue method, which uses fiberglass sheets joined with wire and epoxy, but there are many other methods. Follow the link below to find out the basic methods.

3
Get some plans. You can buy boatbuilding plans, or find free plans online at a page such as the one linked to below. You may have to buy a book if you want to build a boat with planks, but there are plenty of stitch-and-glue plans online.
-
4
Get space and material. Clear out a garage to build your boat in. Although you can build a boat outside, it makes a lot more sense to do it indoors. It will be easier to make accurate measurements, and you won't have to worry about inclement weather.
-
5
Measure and cut the parts. For a simple stitch-and-glue boat, all you will have to do is trace the shapes in the plans onto boards and then saw them. The more simplistic the shape of the boat, the easier this will be to do.
-
6
Attach the pieces. In stitch-and-glue method construction, start by drilling small holes near the edges of both pieces of wood you want to join. Next, twist wire between the holes to hold the pieces together. Finally, make the join with epoxy and fiberglass tape.
-
7
Paint the boat. Paint not only makes the boat look nice, but protects it from water damage. The way you paint and coat the boat depends on what it is made of. The link below explains how to paint stitch-and-glue plywood boats.
