How to Stop a Dog Fight

The most important thing to be aware of when trying to break up two dogs that are fighting is that the dogs are in survival mode and they will not respond to commands that they normally would. This means you have to take your own safety into consideration and be careful so you don't get bitten. Follow these steps for stopping a dog fight safely.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Try to remain calm. Running towards two dogs that are fighting and yelling for them to stop will not do any good, it can even make them more riled up by adding another element of disorder to the fight.

  2. Step 2

The best case scenario is when two people are present so that you are not alone. If this is the case, both of you need to walk up to the dogs from behind and firmly grab their hind legs.

  3. Step 3

After both of you have a good grip of the dogs you need to lift up their hind legs and pull them backwards. As you are walking backwards you should also spin the dog in a circular motion, but not very fast, just enough so that the dog can keep its balance on the front legs.

  4. Step 4

By turning in a circular motion you prevent the dog from turning around and attacking you because he or she is trying not to fall.

  5. Step 5

Now you need to separate the dogs by pulling them into an enclosure where they can cool off by themselves.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never grab the dogs by their collars to break up a fight, it will almost always result in you being bitten.

on 4/19/2009 Picking up the hind legs of each dog IS the correct and safest way to get the two dogs apart, but you must keep hold of their back legs until someone has control of the front end, or you have the dog inside a vehicle or crate or something. They can't fight without their back legs, and they can't turn and bite you -- not if you have a good hold on them and keep the legs up in the air. The problem with this article is it does not tell what you can do if you are the only person (not much, really, unless the dogs are not seriously intent on killing one another). As for spray bottles and such, they will only work if the dogs are not fully intent on the fight. If they are, then the water will likely make them more angry. Where did the cattle prod issue come from?

on 4/11/2009 i really don't think this was helpfull. i hope people realize this is not good advice to follow, and i hope they read the comments and realize that cattle prods are good for nothing. not even for use on cows. its just sickening to actually know that somebody would recommend to use one on an animal. and never follow the advice origanlly given in this article. you could end up bitten or in the hospital.

on 3/7/2009 I've broken up many a dog fight at the dog park. Here are some methods to use: A water spray bottle works great if u don't have a hose, or clap loudly while moving towards them and shout "break it up". Also, u can grab them by the scruff or collar. Hind legs.... not so much.
