How to Shorten the Chain on a Chandelier
Most chandeliers come with a large amount of chain and wire, usually more than enough to hang the chandelier. In fact, for most new chandeliers, you are going to need to know how to shorten the chain on the chandelier. It's not difficult, but some methods do take a certain amount of strength, so make sure you have someone handy nearby who can bend metal. Does this Spark an idea?

Remove the excess links. To do this, you will need to pry apart the link. Use two screwdrivers, one one each side of the link. Twist them towards each other, and it will open the link. Do this for each link until it is short enough, or remove one link on each side of a section of links.

Shorten the wire. Once the links have been removed, you will need to shorten the wire. Using wire cutters, cut the wire a minimum of one foot longer than the chain, so you have extra length for weaving it through the chain and attaching it to the power source.

Reattach the chandelier. Once enough links have been removed, you will need to open a last link in order to reattach the chandelier to the ceiling. Do it in the same manner as instructed in Step 1. If the links are particularly thick, you might need to use pliers.

Loop the chain. If you do not wish to remove links, you can loop the chain through a decorative hook placed on your ceiling. Make sure that the hook is centered over where you want the chandelier to hang, and not the power box or medallion. The chandelier will be in essence hanging from the hook.
